Daily Mindfulness 9/27/12 – Getting to Know Ourselves

Mindfulness helps us get to know ourselves.  Many of us have difficulty spending time alone.  One thing that may help is distinguishing the difference between spending time by yourself and time WITH yourself.  When we spend time with ourselves, we get to know ourselves a little bit better.  Getting to know ourselves is just one of the many gifts of mindfulness.

In order to get to know ourselves a little better, we must make the effort to spend time with ourselves.  Every moment is an opportunity to do so.  You may start by utilizing any “alone time” you have during the day.  Driving to work, walking, lying in bed, showering, and eating are examples of times we may be alone throughout the day. During these times, live mindfully.  Taste the food you are eating, feel the warm water of the shower, feel the ground beneath your feet, stay in the moment!  Feel how this present moment feels.  When you are in the moment, recognize what you are feeling, what is making you feel this way, and do not judge it either positively or negatively.  Essentially, stay in the present moment in your body, mind, and heart.  Try this practice a few times throughout the day, and get to know yourself a little bit better!
