What is Jade?
Jade is a term used to describe an ornamental stone popular in Eastern traditions. Green jade is the most common found, although it may be found in a creamy white, yellow, blue, or pink, and rarely in red. Used for centuries in China, jade is a ritualistic stone.
Nephrite vs. Jadeite
The word jade actually applies to two completely different stones. The first type of jade is nephrite. Nephrite is the cheaper, more common form of jade. Jadeite is the other type of jade, and is more expensive. Jadeite is slightly harder than quartz and similar in hardness to quartz. Nephrite is a bit softer, and thus cheaper. Jadeite is only found in a few dozen places across the globe, while nephrite is found far more commonly.
