We have difficulties understanding why people behave certain ways. We wonder why people don’t do this or that. We see the surface, the actions. We forget that just like ourselves, everyone experiences emotions and thoughts. Specifically, people suffer, and from painful thoughts and emotions often come hurtful actions.

Practicing mindfulness, we remember times where we have not been mindful of our own actions and we have harmed others. We remember what it feels like to suffer from our thoughts or emotions. For most of us, we have suffered very recently if we are truly be honest with ourselves. Rather than judge based on the surface, we compassionately look a little deeper. We touch the other person’s pain, joy, sorrow, love, or whatever they may be experiencing.

Most often, we are thinking about ourselves. We think of things we have done, things we must do, and how we are feeling. Although it is greatly beneficial to be mindful of what is going on within us, we must also be conscious of the world around us.

Practicing mindfulness, we bring our loving-kindness practice into our daily lives. When we have encounters with others, we listen mindfully and compassionately. When we feel unpleasant emotions toward somebody we try to be mindful of their struggles and suffering. When somebody is happy, we practice sympathetic joy. It is with these practices that we can turn our metta practice into selflessness in our daily lives.
