Pennsylvania's reputation on the Appalachian Trail is a tale of rocks, resilience, and the power of community. The state, known as 'Rocksylvania,' presents a unique challenge to hikers, with its endless rocky terrain and less-than-hospitable trail towns. However, for our hiker, being a Pennsylvania citizen offered a chance to romanticize the trail, and they devised a strategy to conquer it with a blend of determination and treats.
The Merger and Southern PA's Charm
In the southern part of the state, our hiker formed a unique bond with fellow hikers, merging their tramilies into an 'extended family.' This merger brought a sense of camaraderie and support, especially as they navigated the long, flat stretches of Maryland and Pennsylvania. The highlight? A delivered pizza to their campsite, thanks to the power of an English accent!
Southern Pennsylvania offered a charming escape with its farmland, pine forests, and Amish country. The hiker felt a deep connection to the trail, especially when staying with a trail angel who treated them like family. The area's beautiful shelters, some with landscaping, added to the appeal. A memorable moment was the homemade ice cream at a farm stand run by young Mennonites, a delightful 8:30 a.m. treat.
Central PA: A Slump and a Silver Lining
Central Pennsylvania presented a challenge. The rocks started to appear, and the towns became less welcoming. Our hiker's ankle twist and subsequent knee injury added to the mental strain. However, even in this slump, there were silver linings. The hiker received a thoughtful care package from best friends, and a zero day in Hamburg offered a unique experience with a U-Haul 'whip,' brewery tours, and a relaxing hotel stay.
Northern PA: The Rock Show and a Bear Encounter
In the north, the rocks intensified, but our hiker's spirits remained high, knowing the worst was behind them. They revisited familiar sections, reliving memories of past hikes with friends and their dog, Felix. A highlight was the Thunderhead Lodge, where they met up with friends and family, and the Lehigh Tunnel walk, a personal milestone.
The climb out of Lehigh was a triumph, offering amazing views and a fun scramble. The hiker's last day in Pennsylvania was memorable for a different reason: their first-ever bear encounter. They also crossed into New Jersey just before a heat wave, taking a well-deserved zero day to celebrate leaving Pennsylvania behind.
Special Visitors and Friend Blending
Throughout the journey, special visitors added to the trail's richness. Old friends and new blended together, creating a unique community. Our hiker's college friend joined them for the 'hardest 8 miles' of the trail, and they enjoyed trail magic and Indian food. Singe's friend hosted them in central PA, and Loon's family flew in from California, offering a week of slackpacking and quality time with friends and family.
This journey through Pennsylvania was a testament to the power of community and the ability to find joy and resilience in the face of challenges. It's a story of friendship, perseverance, and the unique experiences that make hiking the Appalachian Trail an unforgettable adventure.
